Diogo Cão

c. 1452–c. 1486 · 15th century

Diogo Cão was a Portuguese navigator who explored the coast of west-central Africa in the 1480s. He reached the mouth of the Congo River around 1483, establishing the first contact between Portugal and the Kongo Empire. This contact led to diplomatic exchanges, the conversion of the Kongo elite to Christianity and long-term Portuguese involvement in the region.
