Dobrotitsa

d. c. 1386 · 14th century · Also known as Dobrotitsa of Dobruja

Dobrotitsa was the ruler of the Dobrujan principality on the western Black Sea coast from about 1347 until his death around 1386, with his seat at Kaliakra. The Byzantines gave him the title of despot. He maintained a fleet, fought the Genoese and intervened in the affairs of the Empire of Trebizond. The region of Dobruja is generally thought to take its name from him.
