Douglas Treaties

1850–1854 · 19th century · Also known as Vancouver Island Treaties

The Douglas Treaties were fourteen land purchase agreements made between 1850 and 1854 by James Douglas, chief factor of the Hudson's Bay Company and governor of Vancouver Island, with First Nations around Victoria, Saanich, Sooke, Nanaimo and Fort Rupert. In return for blankets and other goods, the nations surrendered land while keeping their village sites and the right to hunt and fish. They were the only treaties made in colonial British Columbia.
