Colony of Vancouver Island

1849 CE – 1866 CE · capital Victoria

A British colony granted to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1849 to secure the Pacific coast north of the 49th parallel, with its capital at Victoria.

Origins

After the Oregon Treaty of 1846 left Britain only the lands north of the 49th parallel, the Crown made Vancouver Island a colony in 1849 and leased it to the Hudson's Bay Company on condition that it bring settlers. Fort Victoria, founded by the Company in 1843, became the capital. The first governor, Richard Blanshard, resigned within two years.

Rule and society

James Douglas, the Company's chief factor, governed from 1851 to 1864. Between 1850 and 1854 he concluded fourteen land purchase agreements, the Douglas Treaties, with Lekwungen and other First Nations. A small elected assembly, the first in western Canada, met from 1856. Coal mines at Nanaimo and farming supplied the colony, but settlers were few until the Fraser River gold rush of 1858 turned Victoria into a boom town.

Decline and legacy

The Company's lease ended in 1859. Falling revenues after the gold rushes, and the costs of two separate governments, led Britain to merge the island with the mainland as the Colony of British Columbia in 1866.
