Duke Wen of Qin

d. 716 BCE · 8th century BCE

Duke Wen of Qin ruled the State of Qin from 765 to 716 BCE. He defeated the Rong peoples and took the lands around Mount Qi, the old Zhou heartland in the Wei valley, gathering the Zhou population that remained there. The Shiji credits him with appointing historians to keep records and with introducing harsher punishments, steps in Qin's growth into an organised state.
