Dutch conquest of the Banda Islands
The Dutch conquest of the Banda Islands was the seizure of these nutmeg-producing islands in 1621 by the Dutch East India Company under Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Most of the native population was killed, enslaved or driven out, and the islands were resettled with plantations worked by enslaved labour, securing a Dutch monopoly on nutmeg and mace.
