East Kalimantan

Also known as Kalimantan Timur

East Kalimantan is a province of Indonesia on the eastern side of the island of Borneo, with its capital at Samarinda and the oil city of Balikpapan. Its rivers were home to the early Hindu kingdom of Kutai, whose Sanskrit inscriptions are among the oldest in Indonesia. Rich in oil, gas, coal and timber, it was chosen in 2019 as the site of Nusantara, the new national capital being built to replace Jakarta.
