East Karelia
East Karelia is the part of Karelia that lay under Russian rule, east of the Finnish border, between Lake Ladoga, Lake Onega and the White Sea. Much of the Kalevala folk poetry was collected among its Karelian villages. After 1917 Finnish nationalists sought to unite it with Finland, leading to the Uhtua republic and other expeditions, but it remained Soviet.
