Edicts of Ashoka
The Edicts of Ashoka are a series of inscriptions on rocks and pillars issued by the Maurya emperor Ashoka in the third century BCE. They proclaim his commitment to dharma, his remorse after the Kalinga war, and policies of tolerance, welfare and moral government. They are the earliest substantial written records of Indian history and a key source on Maurya Empire governance.
