Elagabalus

c. 204–222 · 3rd century · Also known as Heliogabalus

Elagabalus was Roman emperor from 218 to 222, born Varius Avitus Bassianus into the priestly family of Emesa and great-nephew of the empress Julia Domna. Raised to power as a teenager by his grandmother Julia Maesa, who claimed he was Caracalla's son, he made his god Elagabal the chief deity of Rome. His religious innovations and conduct caused scandal, and the Praetorian Guard murdered him and his mother in 222.
