Ely, Cambridgeshire

Ely is a cathedral city in Cambridgeshire, England, on a former island in the Fens. Æthelthryth founded a monastery there in 673; refounded in 970, it became a cathedral in 1109, and its Romanesque and Gothic cathedral dominates the flat landscape. Hereward the Wake held out at Ely against William the Conqueror in 1070–71.
