Enuma Elish

Also known as Babylonian Epic of Creation

Enuma Elish is the Babylonian epic of creation, named after its opening words 'When on high'. Written in Akkadian on seven tablets, it tells how the god Marduk defeated the primeval sea goddess Tiamat, created the world from her body and was made king of the gods, with Babylon as his city. It was recited at the New Year festival, and many scholars date its composition to the late 2nd millennium BCE, possibly the reign of Nebuchadnezzar I.
