d. 799 · 8th century · Also known as Eric, Duke of Friuli

Eric of Friuli was the Frankish duke of Friuli under Charlemagne, commanding the march that faced the Avars and the Slavs. In 796 his forces stormed the Ring, the fortified headquarters of the Avar khagan, and carried its treasure to Aachen, a blow from which the Avar Khaganate never recovered. He was killed in 799 at Trsat, near modern Rijeka, while campaigning on the Adriatic coast.
