Ernst Röhm

1887–1934 · 20th century

Ernst Röhm was a German officer and early Nazi leader who commanded the SA, the party's paramilitary stormtroopers, which grew to millions of members by 1933. His demands for a 'second revolution' and for the SA to absorb the army alarmed the generals and Hitler's conservative allies, and he was arrested and shot in the Night of the Long Knives in July 1934.
