Esen Taishi

d. 1455 · 15th century · Also known as Esen Tayisi

Esen Taishi was a leader of the Oirat Mongols who dominated Mongolia in the mid-15th century, ruling through a puppet Genghisid khan. In 1449 he defeated a Ming army at Tumu and captured the Zhengtong Emperor. In 1453 he took the title of khan himself, breaking the rule that only descendants of Genghis Khan could be khan, but he was killed in 1455 and Oirat power declined.
