Eulalia of Mérida

c. 292–304 · 3rd century · Also known as Saint Eulalia of Mérida

Eulalia of Mérida was a young Christian martyred at Emerita Augusta, capital of Roman Lusitania, in 304 during the persecution of Diocletian. The poet Prudentius celebrated her death in his hymns, and her cult spread widely across Hispania and beyond. Her shrine at Mérida became one of the main pilgrimage centres of late Roman and Visigothic Spain.
