Ezzelino III da Romano

1194–1259 · 13th century

Ezzelino III da Romano was a Ghibelline lord of the March of Treviso and an ally of Emperor Frederick II. From the 1220s to the 1250s he dominated Verona, Vicenza and Padua, ruling with a cruelty that made him a byword for tyranny. A papal crusade was proclaimed against him, and he was wounded and captured at Cassano in 1259, dying soon after.
