Ezzonids

The Ezzonids were a noble dynasty of Lotharingia, named after Ezzo, count palatine of Lotharingia (died 1034), who married Matilda, daughter of Emperor Otto II. They held the palatine office in Lotharingia in the eleventh century, with lands around Aachen, Bonn and Cologne, and members became dukes of Swabia and Bavaria and archbishops of Cologne. Pressure from the archbishops of Cologne later pushed the counts palatine south towards the middle Rhine.
