Faku

c. 1780–1867 · 19th century · Also known as Faku kaNgqungqushe

Faku was king of the Mpondo in present-day Eastern Cape, South Africa, from the 1820s until his death in 1867. He survived attacks by Shaka's Zulu army, absorbed refugees from the wars of the period and made the Mpondo one of the strongest powers between the Cape and Natal. In 1844 he signed a treaty with the Cape Colony recognising his authority over a large territory.
