Mpondo

Also known as amaMpondo, Pondo

The Mpondo are a Xhosa-speaking Nguni people of the north-eastern Eastern Cape, South Africa, in the region historically called Pondoland, between the Mthatha and Mtamvuna rivers. Their kingdom kept its independence until it was annexed to the Cape Colony in 1894. In 1960 the Mpondo revolt against apartheid's Bantustan policy was crushed by the state.
