Mpondomise Kingdom

1600 CE – 1880 CE (approx.)

A southern Nguni kingdom of the eastern Cape whose last independent king, Mhlontlo, led a revolt against Cape rule in 1880.

Origins

The Mpondomise share their earliest royal genealogy with the Mpondo, from whom they separated many generations before written records. By the 17th century they occupied the upper Mzimvubu and Tsitsa valleys, around modern Tsolo and Qumbu in the eastern Cape.

Rule and society

Kings ruled through royal kin and councillors over chiefdoms of cattle-herding and cereal-farming homesteads. The Mpondomise were renowned as rainmakers and were respected by neighbouring peoples for their ritual standing. In the 19th century they were caught between the Mpondo, the Thembu and incoming Mfengu and Sotho groups, and the kingdom was often divided between rival branches.

Decline and legacy

Mhlontlo accepted a Cape magistrate in 1873, but in 1880 his followers killed the magistrate Hamilton Hope and rose in revolt. The rising was crushed, Mhlontlo fled to Basutoland, and the Mpondomise lands were absorbed into the Cape Colony.
