Farinata degli Uberti

c. 1212–1264 · 13th century

Farinata degli Uberti (c. 1212–1264) was a Florentine nobleman and leader of the city's Ghibelline faction. Exiled in 1258, he helped lead the Ghibelline forces that crushed the Guelphs at Montaperti in 1260, and at the council of Empoli that followed he alone opposed the proposal to destroy Florence. Dante placed him among the heretics in the Inferno, and he was posthumously condemned for heresy.
