First Samnite War

343–341 BCE · 4th century BCE

The First Samnite War was the first conflict between Rome and the Samnites of the central Apennines. It began in 343 BCE when the Samnites attacked the Sidicini and then Capua, which appealed to Rome. Livy describes Roman victories in Campania, though his account is doubted. The war ended in 341 BCE, and Rome's foothold in Campania began its expansion into southern Italy.
