First Schleswig War

1848–1851 · 19th century

The First Schleswig War was fought from 1848 to 1851 between Denmark and the Schleswig-Holstein rebels, supported by Prussia and the German Confederation, over the future of the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. After foreign pressure forced Prussia to withdraw, the Danes defeated the rebel army at Isted in 1850. The London Protocol of 1852 restored Danish rule but left the national conflict unresolved.
