Schleswig-Holstein
Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost state of Germany, between the North Sea and the Baltic, with its capital at Kiel. It takes its name from the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, ruled by the Danish king for centuries, whose status provoked the Schleswig Wars of 1848–1851 and 1864. Prussia annexed both duchies in 1867, and northern Schleswig returned to Denmark after a plebiscite in 1920.
