Schleswig
Schleswig is a historical region and former duchy in southern Jutland, divided since a plebiscite of 1920 between Denmark (North Schleswig) and Germany (South Schleswig). Ruled by Danish royal princes and from 1386 by the counts of Holstein, it was joined with Holstein under King Christian I in 1460. Rival Danish and German claims led to the Schleswig Wars of 1848–1851 and 1864, after which it passed to Prussia.
