First War of Castro

1641–1644 · 17th century

The First War of Castro was fought from 1641 to 1644 between Pope Urban VIII, supported by his Barberini nephews, and Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma, over the Duchy of Castro and the Farnese family's debts. Venice, Tuscany and Modena joined Parma against papal expansion. The papal forces fared badly, and the peace of 1644 restored Castro to the Farnese.
