Fort Niagara
Fort Niagara is a fortress at the mouth of the Niagara River on Lake Ontario, in present-day New York State. The French built a stone 'French Castle' there in 1726 to control the route to the upper Great Lakes. British forces captured it after a siege in July 1759, and it passed to the United States in 1796. Restored, it is now a historic site.
