Fougères

Fougères is a town in the Ille-et-Vilaine department of north-eastern Brittany. Its castle, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, guarded the Breton border with Normandy and Maine. The town was seized by a captain in English service in 1449, an act that restarted the war and led to the French reconquest of Normandy, and it was taken by the French in 1488 shortly before the Battle of Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier.
