Frans Hals

c. 1582–1666 · 17th century

Frans Hals was a Dutch painter of Haarlem, one of the great portraitists of the Dutch Golden Age. Born in Antwerp, he was known for loose, rapid brushwork that gave his sitters a lively, spontaneous air, as in The Laughing Cavalier and his large group portraits of Haarlem civic guards and regents. Neglected after his death, he strongly influenced nineteenth-century realists and impressionists.
