Frederick I of Württemberg

1754–1816 · 18th century · Also known as Frederick II, Duke of Württemberg

Frederick I was the last duke and first king of Württemberg. As an ally of Napoleon he became an elector in 1803 and king on 1 January 1806, nearly doubling his territory with church lands, imperial cities and Upper Swabia. He ruled autocratically, setting aside the old estates, and changed sides in 1813, keeping his crown at the Congress of Vienna. His son William I succeeded him.
