French Directory

1795–1799 · 18th century · Also known as Directoire

The French Directory was the five-member executive that governed the French First Republic from November 1795 to November 1799 under the Constitution of the Year III. It faced financial crisis, corruption and repeated coups against royalists and Jacobins, while its armies, including Napoleon Bonaparte's in Italy, created sister republics across Europe. Bonaparte overthrew it in the Coup of 18 Brumaire.
