    Pitt's income tax becomes law in Britain

    William Pitt the Younger's income tax, set at two shillings in the pound on higher incomes, received royal assent to fund the war against Revolutionary France. Abolished in 1816, it returned for good in 1842.

  2. 7 March

    Napoleon storms Jaffa

    French troops took the port of Jaffa during Napoleon's Syrian campaign. Thousands of prisoners were then executed, and plague broke out in the army, which was halted at Acre.

  3. 4 May

    Tipu Sultan is killed as the British storm Seringapatam

    British and allied troops breached the walls of Mysore's capital, and Tipu Sultan died fighting at a gate. His defeat removed the strongest opponent of the East India Company in southern India.

  4. 9 November

    Napoleon's coup of 18 Brumaire topples the Directory

    Napoleon Bonaparte and his allies began a coup against the Directory, completed the next day. The new Consulate made Napoleon First Consul and effective ruler of France.

    George Washington dies at Mount Vernon

    George Washington died aged 67 after a throat infection, worsened by heavy bloodletting. Having twice given up power, as commander and as president, he was mourned as the father of his country.

  6. Revolt

    Viva Maria uprising

    The Viva Maria was a popular uprising against the French occupation of Tuscany in 1799, which began in Arezzo in May under the cry 'Viva Maria'.
