Tej Singh (Sikh commander)

1799–1862 · 19th century · Also known as Raja Tej Singh

Tej Singh was commander-in-chief of the Sikh Khalsa army during the First Anglo-Sikh War of 1845–1846. Like the wazir Lal Singh, he is widely believed to have deliberately mismanaged the war, notably by withdrawing at Ferozeshah, in the hope that the British would break the army's power. After the war he was favoured by the British and became Raja of Sialkot.
