Gaborone

1964 · 20th century · Also known as Gaberones

Gaborone is the capital and largest city of Botswana, in the south-east of the country near the South African border. It was built from 1964 as a planned capital for independence, since the Bechuanaland Protectorate had been run from Mafikeng in South Africa. It takes its name from Kgosi Gaborone, a Batlokwa chief whose village stood nearby.
