Galbert of Bruges

d. c. 1134 · 12th century

Galbert of Bruges was a cleric and notary in the service of the counts of Flanders. His Latin account of the murder of Count Charles the Good in 1127 and the succession crisis that followed, written almost day by day as events unfolded, is one of the most detailed contemporary narratives of the twelfth century. It shows the Flemish towns claiming a voice in choosing the count before Thierry of Alsace prevailed in 1128.
