Franc of Bruges

Also known as Liberty of Bruges, Brugse Vrije

The Franc of Bruges was the rural castellany surrounding Bruges in the County of Flanders, which governed itself through its own aldermen. Prosperous and populous, it was recognised in the fourteenth century as the fourth of the Four Members of Flanders, alongside Ghent, Bruges and Ypres. It lasted until the French annexation of 1795, and its palace still stands on the Burg square in Bruges.
