Four Members of Flanders

The Four Members of Flanders were the bodies that spoke for the County of Flanders in its dealings with its rulers: the great cities of Ghent, Bruges and Ypres, joined in the fourteenth century by the rural district of the Franc of Bruges. They negotiated taxation, trade and policy with the counts and later the Burgundian dukes, and formed the core of the county's representative institutions.
