Four Garrisons of Anxi

648–c. 790 · 7th century

The Four Garrisons of Anxi were Tang dynasty military posts in the Tarim Basin, usually Kucha, Khotan, Kashgar and Karasahr, under the Protectorate General to Pacify the West. They secured Chinese control of the Silk Road oasis kingdoms, which kept their own rulers, and were repeatedly contested with the Tibetan Empire, which took them around 790.
