c. 1835–1905 · 19th century

Gbudwe (c. 1835–1905) was the most powerful of the Avongara kings of the Zande, ruling a kingdom in what is now South Sudan. He resisted Arab-Sudanese ivory and slave traders, was for a time imprisoned by the Egyptian administration and later fought the Mahdists. He was mortally wounded in 1905 while resisting a British expedition, and his kingdom passed under Anglo-Egyptian rule.
