Zande people

Also known as Azande

The Zande, or Azande, are a people of north-central Africa living in South Sudan, the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the south-east of the Central African Republic. From the 18th century the Avongara aristocracy built a series of conquest kingdoms among them, which resisted traders, the Mahdists and European colonisers into the early 20th century. Their beliefs in witchcraft and oracles became famous through Evans-Pritchard's study of 1937.
