Wilhelm Junker

1840–1892 · 19th century

Wilhelm Junker was a Russian-born explorer of German descent who travelled widely in north-central Africa. Between 1879 and 1886 he explored the Uele and Mbomou basins and the lands of the Zande and Mangbetu, staying with rulers such as Zemio. Cut off by the Mahdist rising, he returned to Europe by way of East Africa, and his travel account became a major source on the region.
