Bahr al-Ghazal
Bahr al-Ghazal is a region of north-western South Sudan named after the river that drains it into the White Nile. In the 19th century it was a centre of the ivory and slave trade, dominated by armed trading companies such as that of al-Zubayr Rahma Mansur, and became a province of Egyptian Sudan in 1873. Rabih az-Zubayr began his career there.
