Gelnhausen Privilege

1186 · 12th century

The Gelnhausen Privilege was a charter issued by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa at Gelnhausen in 1186 confirming the rights of the citizens of Bremen. It limited the archbishop's power over them and recognised that a serf who lived in the city for a year and a day without being claimed became free. It is regarded as the founding charter of Bremen's civic liberties.
