Georgius Agricola

1494–1555 · 16th century · Also known as Georg Agricola, Georg Bauer

Georgius Agricola was a German physician and scholar, often called the father of mineralogy. Working as a town doctor at Joachimsthal and Chemnitz, he studied the mines of the Ore Mountains and wrote De re metallica, published in 1556, a year after his death: a systematic account of mining and metallurgy, illustrated with woodcuts, that remained the standard work for two centuries.
