Germán Busch

1904–1939 · 20th century

Germán Busch was a Bolivian army officer, a hero of the Chaco War, who became president in 1937 after overthrowing David Toro. Continuing 'military socialism', he issued a labour code, convened a convention that wrote the social constitution of 1938 and in 1939 ordered mining companies to hand over their foreign earnings to the state. He died of a gunshot wound in August 1939, probably by suicide.
