Chaco War
The Chaco War was fought between Bolivia and Paraguay from 1932 to 1935 over the northern Gran Chaco, a region believed to hold oil. Paraguay, under José Félix Estigarribia, won most of the battles, and some 90,000 soldiers died on both sides, many from thirst and disease. The peace treaty of 1938, mediated with Argentine help, gave Paraguay most of the disputed territory.
