René Barrientos

1919–1969 · 20th century

René Barrientos was a Bolivian air force general who, as vice-president, overthrew President Víctor Paz Estenssoro in November 1964. He ruled Bolivia, as junta leader and then elected president, until his death in a helicopter crash in 1969. His government repressed the mining unions, notably at Siglo XX in 1967, and its army captured and executed Che Guevara the same year.
