René Descartes

1596–1650 · 17th century

René Descartes was a French philosopher and mathematician who spent most of his working life in the Dutch Republic. His Discourse on the Method of 1637 and Meditations of 1641 founded modern rationalist philosophy with the principle 'I think, therefore I am', and he created analytic geometry. He corresponded at length with Princess Elisabeth of the Palatinate and died in Stockholm in 1650 while serving Queen Christina.
