Gorze Abbey

757–1572 · 8th century

Gorze Abbey was a Benedictine monastery near Metz in Lorraine, founded in 757 by Bishop Chrodegang of Metz. Restored in 933 by Bishop Adalbero I of Metz under Abbot Einold and John of Gorze, it became the centre of a reform movement that spread strict monastic observance to many abbeys in Lorraine and Germany. The abbey was secularised in 1572.
